Lemon is one of the most popular and versatile citrus fruit. Along with its use for flavor, lemon since long has also been used for its medicinal value. A rich source of vitamin C, lemons possess immense health benefits ranging from its antibacterial and antiviral properties. One of the most common ways to reap the health benefits of lemon is by juicing it.
Before incorporating something in our diet we question, why is it essential to our health? what are its benefits? To put these queries to rest I have listed down a few benefits of lemon water and how you can make it a part of your diet.
1. It alkalizes your body (i.e balances your pH).
While very acidic on their own, lemons have a very alkalizing effect on the body. Why is pH so important? It’s simple: cancer cells can’t grow in an alkaline environment. Keeping your body slightly alkaline by consuming alkalizing foods is extremely important to your overall health.
2. Gives your immune system a boost
Vitamin C is extremely crucial to the functioning of the immune system, and lemon juice is full of it. The level of vitamin C in your system is one of the first things to plummet when you’re stressed, which is why experts recommended popping extra vitamin C during especially stressful days.
3. Prevents kidney stones
Incredibly painful crystals form in your kidneys when substances (calcium, uric acid and oxalate) become concentrated, and drinking lemon water (with the juice of two lemons per day) can help prevent the stones from forming.
4. Provides a potassium boost
Your body can’t function without potassium. It’s necessary for nerve-muscle communication, transporting nutrients and waste and blood pressure regulation. Lemon juice contains more potassium than apples or grapes!
5. Aids digestion
Lemon juice not only encourages healthy digestion by loosening toxins in your digestive tract, it helps to relieve symptoms of indigestion such as heartburn, burping, and bloating.
6. Cleanses your system
It helps flush out the toxins in your body by enhancing enzyme function, stimulating your liver.
7. Freshens your breath
You might avoid bad breath by drinking a glass of lemon water after meals and first thing in the morning. Lemon is thought to stimulate saliva and water also helps prevent a dry mouth, which can lead to bad breath caused by bacteria.
8. Keeps your skin blemish-free
The antioxidants in lemon juice help to not only decrease blemishes but may help reduce skin wrinkling, dry skin from aging, and damage from the sun.
9. Helps you lose weight
Lemons contain pectin fiber, which assists in fighting hunger cravings.
10. Reduces inflammation
If you drink lemon water on a regular basis, it will decrease the acidity in your body, which is where disease states occur. It removes uric acid in your joints, which is one of the main causes of inflammation
For those who weigh less than 65 kgs, squeeze half a lemon’s worth of juice into a glass of water. If anyone weighs over 65 kgs, use an entire lemon’s juice.
Lukewarm lemon water is recommended. You can dilute the lemon juice more, depending on your personal taste.
